Radiant joy: The relationship God longs to have with you

The Bible describes Christianity as a relationship with a living God, one who desires to meet our deepest needs and rescue us from despair. This profound longing for connection is beautifully captured in the words of Jesus:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 (The Bible)

These words are not just a comforting invitation; they represent the heart of God’s desire for us. They reveal a God who sees our struggles and extends a hand of compassion. But this is only a glimpse of His promises. Consider further what Jesus said:

I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

John 10:10 (The Bible)

If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’

John 7:37-38 (The Bible)

Through these verses, we grasp the depth of God's heart for us. He longs to fill our lives with joy, peace, and fulfillment. He desires that the deepest longings of our hearts might be satisfied. This is not merely theoretical; the Bible provides numerous examples of men and women throughout history who found their joy in God, illustrating the extraordinary life that awaits those who trust in Him.

Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

Psalm 34:5 (The Bible)

Isn't it amazing to think that the God who created the universe, a being so eternal and all-knowing, is genuinely interested in you? Not in a distant or intrusive way, but in a way that seeks your true happiness! Imagine Him as a supportive friend at the finish line of a race, cheering you on, eager to see you succeed. He has crafted you for greatness and embodies benevolence and grace.

However, you might find this hard to believe. It may seem far-fetched or too good to be true. But these are experiences you can embrace in your own life. This article aims to explore how you can connect with this incredible narrative and uncover the joy and fulfilment that comes from a relationship with God.

Facing the storm: confronting the struggles that hold us back

Perhaps as you read so far, you may be skeptical. If God truly has such wonderful plans for me, why don’t I experience them in my life? Why do so many bad things happen around me? These are crucial questions, and the Bible offers insightful answers.

The Bible describes a pervasive issue in our world: it’s called sin. Simply put, sin means to miss the target, sometimes by a little, sometimes by a long way. What is that target? It is what satisfies God. The Bible describes God as Holy; He is not merely good but perfect, and His standard is perfection. Unsurprisingly, we can’t measure up to that standard. None of us is perfect; we all fail in subtle ways, not only by God’s standards but often in living up to our own.

The Bible reminds us:

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23 (The Bible)

You might think, “But I'm a good person! Sure, I've made mistakes, but I've done a lot of good overall, the scales are in my favor.”

Now, imagine this: you’re driving along the motorway at 80 mph for just a short period, and a speed camera catches you. As a result, you have to pay a fine. You might argue to the judge, "But Sir, for the rest of my journey, I drove at 60 mph! I mostly drove carefully and well under the speed limit!" Would your argument change the final judgment, even if you could prove it to be true? We know it wouldn't.

God is depicted in the Bible as a righteous Judge, and, one day, all will stand before Him. Take a moment to reflect: if you stood before a God who knows everything about you — even your thoughts — how comfortable would you be?

It’s essential to recognise our situation as the Bible describes it. This acknowledgment isn’t meant to downcast us or lead to self-condemnation, but rather to equip us with the knowledge to understand God's solution.

A large part of being able to take hold of what God has for us, is being able to agree with God about our condition before him.

Sin is what holds us back; it is the root of every heartache we experience. On a grand scale, sin causes wars, famine, and disaster, while, on a personal level, it leads to unkindness, pride, and a lack of love. Ultimately, all chaos stems from sin.

The ultimate end of sin is death, an inevitable fate we all face because we are all sinners.

A surprising solution: embracing grace and discovering God's love

Although God opposes sin and must judge it, He has also provided a solution. God is Holy, but He is also Love - love unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. In the original language of the Bible (Ancient Greek), the word for God’s love is Agape, distinct from other types of love. This love is not merely theoretical; it is demonstrated in the most remarkable way imaginable.

Jesus Christ (God Himself) entered our world, pre-existing in eternity as a spirit. At a specific moment in history, He took on a human body and lived among us for 33 years. During His life, astonishing stories unfolded: the blind received sight, the deaf regained hearing, and the dead were brought back to life. People were captivated not only by His miraculous deeds but also by the grace-filled words that flowed from Him. Even soldiers sent to arrest Him acknowledged,

We have never heard anyone speak like this.

John 7:46 (The Bible)

No one like Him had ever stepped foot on this earth, little wonder given that He was God himself.

But this miraculous life came to a tragic end. Jesus was betrayed, handed over to the Roman authorities, and brutally executed as an enemy of the people. Yet in His final moments, He proclaimed,

It is finished.

John 19:30 (The Bible)

These were not words of defeat but of triumph. The only perfect Man bore the judgment meant for us because of our sin. It's like the judge handing out the fine for the speeding ticket and then turning round and paying the fine himself!

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 (The Bible)

This profound love is the foundation of the Christian message. Christ died, but more importantly, He died for YOU. Whoever comes to Him will find forgiveness and enter into a transformative relationship, experiencing true joy.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (The Bible)

This is the heart of God revealed to you. He is waiting with open arms to receive you. The Bible describes God as waiting for an invitation to be part of your life:

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Revelation 3:20 (The Bible)
If you sense God’s call, bow down before Him, humbly acknowledge your sin, ask for His forgiveness, and invite Him into your life. You will never be the same again.
